A soft starter is a device that is used to start and stop electric motors smoothly. The ICM870 is designed to reduce the in-rush current going to your A/C compressor or motor during initial startup. This can provide a number of benefits for HVAC systems, including reduced wear and tear on motors, improved efficiency, reduced noise, improved safety, and additional features. If you are considering a soft starter for your HVAC system, it is important to consult with a qualified HVAC technician to determine if it is the right solution for your needs.

Soft starters are intended for single-speed compressors only, and cannot be integrated to an inverter system.

Upon a fault condition, it will halt operation and initiate a 3 minute anti-short cycle routine while providing diagnostic fault information by means of an LED indicator. Below are additional features:

  • Reduces in-rush current/draw necessary at startup by up to 70%
  • Monitors system health including voltage, current, compressor startup and integrity. Upon a fault condition, it will halt operation and initiate a 3 minute anti-short cycle routine while providing diagnostic fault information by means of an LED indicator.
  • Prolongs the life of the AC by reducing excess torque, wear and tear
  • Helps reduce the noise and flickering that can occur when an AC unit or other large motor starts up. It can also help to prevent the breaker from tripping.
  • Built-in self-learning algorithm - ICM870 will learn the characteristics of the motor is it attached to and adjust its settings accordingly
  • Over-current protection
  • Over/under voltage monitoring
  • Built-in start capacitor
  • LED fault indicators
  • Ultrasonic sealed tamper-proof enclosure
  • Installation hardware is included
Some limits for the ICM870-16A include:

Input:

  • (L1, L2) – 100-240 VAC 50/60Hz
  • Over voltage limits: 115 VAC nominal = 140 VAC, 240 VAC nominal = 264 VAC
  • Under voltage limits: 115 VAC nominal = 95 VAC, 240 VAC nominal =195 VAC

 Outputs:

  • Compressor
  • Solid state/relay
  • Current: Max. nominal = 9 FLA for ICM870-9A, 16 FLA for ICM870-16A
  • Over current limits: ICM870-9A = 11.25A, ICM870-16A = 20A

To be sure you get the appropriate ICM870 soft start kit for your system, check your AC compressor for the run load amps. This is typically located right on the compressor or in the manual for your system. Below is a quick reference guide. Please confirm your own specific equipment requirements.

ICM870-9A: For use with a Compressor Load Amp Rating (RLA) of up to Maximum of 9A

ICM870-16A: For use with a Compressor Load Amp Rating (RLA) of 9.1-16A Maximum

ICM870-32A: For use with a Compressor Load Amp Rating (RLA) of 16.1-32A Maximum

Please refer to your service panel or user manual to determine your equipment’s actual RLA rating before deciding which model ICM870 you need.

Overall, a soft start kit is a great investment for your AC unit. It can help to prolong the life of your unit, reduce noise and flickering, and prevent breaker trips. If you are looking for a way to improve the performance and lifespan of your AC unit, then a soft start kit is a great option.

NOTE:
The ICM870 Series Soft Starts are NOT recommended to be used with air conditioners or heat pumps which have control boards that sense compressor current and perform a lock out for fault conditions. Any Air Conditioner or Heat Pump which has a Comfort Alert control board, or an Emerson Core Sense Module installed are not directly compatible for use with the ICM870 Series Soft Start. The Emerson Core Sense modules can be bypassed when using the ICM870 Series Soft Starts. Unfortunately, the Comfort Alert cannot be bypassed and therefore ICM870 cannot be used. If unsure about the compatibility of your compressor, please call ICM Tech Support at 800-365-5525 before purchasing.
